How to add a poll to Squarespace

You want one question answered on a page, and the Form block is more machinery than the question deserves. A form asks for commitment: fields, a submit, a thank-you page. A one-tap question asks for two seconds, which is why far more people answer it.

The short answer

Nothing built into Squarespace does this job, so every route means adding something. A hosted embed is the quickest of them: one line, about two minutes, no plugin to maintain and no monthly fee on the free tier.

Your three options

RouteWhat it means
What Squarespace gives youSquarespace has no poll block. The nearest thing is the Form block, which is a form: several fields, a submit button, an email notification.
A dedicated app or pluginA polling service pasted into a Code block. That is the same mechanism we use, so the real question is which service you point it at and what it does to your page weight.
A hosted embedOne line of code you paste once. The question, the design and the counting live with the service, so there is nothing to install, update or maintain. This is what VANE it is.

All three work. The right one depends on whether you need a full survey tool or a single question answered well. If it is the second, the embed is faster to set up and lighter on the page.

The two-minute version

Squarespace

Nothing here needs a developer. If you can add a block to a page, you can do all of it.

What you do
  1. Write the question and the options you want counted. Keep it to one question. That is the whole trick.
  2. Copy the line the dashboard gives you. It is the same line for every placement. The question, the design and the counting all live with us.
  3. Open the page in Squarespace, add a Code block where it belongs, paste, and publish.
  4. Load the page and vote once yourself. Your own tap appears in the dashboard within a second, which is how you know it is wired up.

Add a Code block where the question belongs. Code blocks need a paid Squarespace plan; that is a Squarespace rule, not ours.

What visitors see

Did it work? A small hex button sits where you pasted the line. Tapping it opens your question, the visitor picks an option, and the running result appears immediately. No reload, no login, no email.

When not to use us

Code blocks require a paid Squarespace plan. On the Personal plan and above you are fine; on a trial site you will not see the block.

We would rather tell you that here than have you find out after setting it up. If that describes what you need, the app or plugin route in the table above is the better call.

Common questions

Which Squarespace plan do I need?

Any plan that includes Code blocks. That is a Squarespace restriction rather than ours, and it is worth checking on their pricing page before you start, since they change the tiers periodically.

Why can I not see it in the editor?

Code blocks often render as a placeholder while editing. Save and view the live page; the vane will be there.

Can I add it to every page at once?

Yes. Use Code Injection in site settings with a floating placement, and it appears site-wide without touching individual pages.

Does it work on 7.0 and 7.1?

Yes. It is a plain script tag, so it does not depend on the template version.
