How to add a poll to Shopify

You want shoppers to answer one question (which colourway, which flavour, which drop next) without leaving the product page. A poll on a product page is a merchandising tool, not a research tool. The answer tells you what to stock, and the act of answering keeps a shopper on the page a few seconds longer.

The short answer

Nothing built into Shopify does this job, so every route means adding something. A hosted embed is the quickest of them: one line, about two minutes, no plugin to maintain and no monthly fee on the free tier.

Your three options

RouteWhat it means
What Shopify gives youShopify has no built-in poll. Product reviews cover "was this good after I bought it", which is a different question from "which of these should we make".
A dedicated app or pluginA poll app from the Shopify App Store. Usually the fastest route to something rich, at a monthly cost per app and another script on your storefront.
A hosted embedOne line of code you paste once. The question, the design and the counting live with the service, so there is nothing to install, update or maintain. This is what VANE it is.

All three work. The right one depends on whether you need a full survey tool or a single question answered well. If it is the second, the embed is faster to set up and lighter on the page.

The two-minute version

Shopify

Nothing here needs a developer. If you can add a block to a page, you can do all of it.

What you do
  1. Write the question and the options you want counted. Keep it to one question. That is the whole trick.
  2. Copy the line the dashboard gives you. It is the same line for every placement. The question, the design and the counting all live with us.
  3. Open the page in Shopify, add a Custom Liquid section where it belongs, paste, and publish.
  4. Load the page and vote once yourself. Your own tap appears in the dashboard within a second, which is how you know it is wired up.

Add a Custom Liquid section in the theme editor, or paste into a page in the theme code. No theme fork needed.

What visitors see

Did it work? A small hex button sits where you pasted the line. Tapping it opens your question, the visitor picks an option, and the running result appears immediately. No reload, no login, no email.

When not to use us

If you need branching logic, long surveys, or answers written back to customer records, a dedicated survey app will serve you better than we will. We do one question, fast.

We would rather tell you that here than have you find out after setting it up. If that describes what you need, the app or plugin route in the table above is the better call.

Common questions

Will it slow down my store?

The script is async and loaded from a CDN, so it never blocks your theme rendering. It is one small file, cached for four hours, and nothing enters your theme bundle.

Do I need to edit my theme code?

No. A Custom Liquid section in the theme editor is enough, and that survives theme updates. Editing theme files is optional and only useful if you want the same vane on every product page automatically.

Can I put a different poll on each product?

Yes. Each vane has its own id, so a different id means a separate question with its own tally. Use the same id across products if you want one combined result.

Do shoppers need an account?

No. Visitors never log in and never pay. They tap once and see the result.
